Networking
When I started Apothea I had the misconception that business would come to me, right? Nope that was wrong. What I quickly learned was that I needed to build a network of people who knew and trusted me before I’d get hired as a consultant.
Another mistake I made was to completely delete my LinkedIn account so that I could rebrand myself and business together, again that was the wrong decision. Now I had to start from scratch on building a network at the same time as building a business. Not my proudest moment, but I’ve rebuilt and am in better shape than before.
Adam Grant
I recently read an article by Adam Grant, and he discovered that there are 3 types of people: “givers” (put others' interest ahead of their own), “matchers” (aim to trade evenly), and “takers” (use others to maximize success). Interestingly, givers tend to hold the highest positions.
Since starting Apothea I have met literally hundreds of people, from all over the country and even a few international as well. Networking has given me business leads, opened dialogue, and even helped me to get published. My blog has been a big outlet for networking, people love talking about their careers and I’ve bonded with people over industry changes and advancements.
If you're reading this post, I want to let you know that I am not an expert in this area. I am sharing my thoughts because I’ve learned so much in the short time since I launched Apothea. If you are new in this field or just looking for connections feel free to reach out to me, I’d love to connect!
