Board Certification in Medication Therapy Management

I’m officially signed up to take the BCMTMS exam! This is a 2021 goal of mine, and honestly something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while. I’ve been out of pharmacy school for 10 years, and I have to be honest the idea of taking a standardized test kind of gives me anxiety so I’ve been putting it off!

The reason I am getting Board Certified is because I really believe with reduced reimbursement that this is the future of pharmacy. I also really enjoy doing consulting and working one on one with patients, and this checks both of those boxes. At my pharmacy we offer medication therapy services, and this plays a role in my performance evaluation. I obviously want to score as high as I can, so having this certification will give me an advantage.

I wanted to share some information about the exam, as things have changed with Covid-19. There is an application process and once approved you are given a window to take the exam. WIth social distancing in place, I signed up in January and my window opens up in May for testing. The exam costs $450 for initial certification, and the renewal is every 5 years with a fee of $200. My study plan is to use Med Ed 101, there is a specific course for this exam. I signed up for the 6 month package, and my plan is to get in at least 30 mins to 1 hour/day of studying!

Fingers crossed! I’ll keep everyone posted with how it all goes!
